Vegetarian and vegan St. Louis, answered

Short answers to the searches people actually type. Deeper routes live in the guides and the directory.

What is the best vegan restaurant in St. Louis?

It depends on the plate. Terror Tacos is the easiest first vegan meal. Seedz Cafe is the brunch ritual. Bombay Food Junkies is the county Indian kitchen. SweetArt is dessert and breakfast. Lona’s LiL Eats is the local recommendation if you want vegetables that were never an afterthought.

Where can I eat vegetarian in St. Louis?

South Grand is the densest stretch: Tree House, Pizza Head, Terror Tacos, Taste of Lebanon, and Jay’s International. University City has Frida’s. Webster Groves has Balkan Treat Box. The directory lists vegetarian rooms separately from fully vegan kitchens.

Which vegetarian and vegan restaurants in St. Louis have gluten-free menu items?

Two stacked filters. Vegan + GF is fully vegan kitchens with labeled gluten-free items (Seedz waffle, Bombay on rice). Vegetarian + GF is vegetarian and vegan-friendly rooms — Frida’s corn tortillas, Taste of Lebanon falafel, Fork & Stix rice noodles — not the fully vegan list. Shared kitchens unless a listing says dedicated.

Is there vegan food in St. Charles and the county?

Yes. La Vie French Café is fully vegan on St. Charles Main Street. Bike Stop Cafe sits on the Katy Trail. Jafra Mediterranean is in St. Peters. O’Fallon has Thai Kitchen. Creve Coeur has Bombay Food Junkies and Plant Italia. Sunset Hills has Plant Craft Kitchen.

Do you cover Illinois and towns outside St. Louis city?

Core coverage is a 100-mile drive from Clayton, the St. Louis County seat — the city, St. Charles, Jefferson County (Festus, 35 miles), and Metro East including Columbia IL (24 miles). Rolla (101 miles, I-44), Springfield IL (107 miles, I-55), and Carbondale (113 miles, I-57) sit just outside that drive. We still list them, marked On the road, because people actually stop there. Suggest a kitchen if we missed yours.

Is Rolla or Springfield really within 100 miles of St. Louis?

Not as a drive. We measured from Clayton, the St. Louis County seat, along the actual highway. Rolla is 101 miles / about 2 hours on I-44. Springfield IL (not Springfield MO) is 107 miles on I-55. Carbondale is 113 miles on I-57. Straight-line they look closer. Those three cities are extra highway listings, labeled On the road — not part of the 100-mile drive ring. Festus and Columbia IL are inside it.

Do you list Chipotle and other chains?

Yes, behind a toggle. The directory hides chains by default so independent kitchens stay in front. On the Directory or Map, tap Include chains for Chipotle, Crazy Bowls & Wraps, Panera, Qdoba, Taco Bell, and regional chains that build a real vegan plate.

Are there vegan food festivals in St. Louis?

Festival. St. Louis VegFest is the annual free festival at the World’s Fair Pavilion in Forest Park (next: October 11, 2026). Vegan BBQ Fest is a 100% plant-based BBQ day (next: September 13, 2026). Both are listed as events, not restaurants.

Where do the vintage recipes come from?

The archive plates are adapted from Rupert H. Wheldon’s No Animal Food (1910), which is public domain in the US. We keep the method, add salt and oven temps, and name St. Louis grocers — Jay’s International, Local Harvest, Global Foods — so you can buy the bag of lentils here. We do not reprint the book’s medical claims.

Where is the best vegan brunch in St. Louis?

Seedz Cafe in DeMun is the city’s vegan brunch ritual — melts, juices, a slow room. SweetArt in the Coronado does vegan breakfast and bakery. Tree House on South Grand runs a vegetarian brunch that can be made vegan.

Where can I buy vegan groceries in St. Louis?

Jay’s International on South Grand and Local Harvest in Tower Grove South are the neighborhood stops. Global Foods in Kirkwood covers sauces and produce. The Vegan Deli & Butcher in Bevo Mill is the sandwich-and-case move. Pantry staples are also linked from the shop as affiliates.

What is the difference between vegan, vegetarian, and vegan-friendly on this site?

Fully vegan means the whole kitchen is plant-based. Vegetarian means no meat on the menu (dairy or eggs may appear). Vegan-friendly means an omnivore restaurant that builds a real vegan plate — not a side salad.

How do I add or upgrade my restaurant listing?

Standard listings are free. Enhanced and Spotlight packages add a promo, badges, and better placement. Send a business inquiry from the Advertise page. Do not include personal email in the form; we follow up via the website you list.

Are the shop links affiliate links?

Yes. Cookbook and pantry buttons that go to Amazon are paid links — we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The button itself is marked Paid link. Merch is print-on-demand from STL Vegetarian, not affiliate.

Do restaurants pay you in free meals?

No. We do not take free meals, drinks, or merch in exchange for a listing, a ranking, or a Best Of mention. If a kitchen comps a plate and we still write about the visit, that page will say “This visit was comped.” Paid Spotlight and Enhanced are advertising, labeled on the card. They do not buy Best Of. When we eat out to report, we pay.

Own a kitchen? Enhanced and Spotlight packages. Missing a listing? Suggest it.
